The Sportage HEV uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. Together, they produce 232 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system recharges its battery automatically through the engine and regenerative braking, so it never needs to be plugged in. Its estimated combined fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km makes it a convenient option for drivers who want to reduce fuel use without changing their routine.
The Sportage PHEV uses the same turbocharged engine but adds a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor. It generates a combined 268 horsepower and provides an estimated 53 kilometres of all-electric range. That may allow many drivers to complete their daily commute or local errands without using gasoline. Once the electric charge is depleted, the vehicle continues operating with hybrid power. A Level 2 charger can replenish the battery in approximately two hours.
Inside, both models provide seating for five, flexible folding rear seats and generous cargo capacity.
